Our guest of honor, Ambassador Nicholas Burns, has just returned from three pivotal years as U.S. Ambassador to China (2021–2025), a tenure that placed him at the center of one of the most strategically complex relationships in global affairs.
A career diplomat with more than three decades of experience, Ambassador Burns has served in many of the most critical posts in American foreign policy. He was Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, the State Department’s third-ranking official; U.S. Ambassador to NATO at the time of 9/11 and the military missions in Afghanistan and Iraq; and U.S. Ambassador to Greece amid the upheaval of the Balkan conflicts. Earlier in his career, he served on the National Security Council as Senior Director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Affairs and Special Assistant to President Clinton, and Director for Soviet Affairs in the Administration of President Bush. In these roles, he helped shape U.S. engagement at the end of the Cold War and the start of a new European order.
With decades of experience navigating global challenges, Ambassador Burns brings rare insight into U.S. diplomacy at a moment of profound geopolitical change.
He is currently the Roy and Barbara Goodman Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School.
