Eric Foner builds on fresh evidence, including a secret, detailed record of slave escapes, to tell the dramatic story of fugitive slaves and the antislavery activists who defied the law to help them reach freedom. Ed Ayers, President of the University of Richmond, moderates a panel including Eric Foner, professor of history at Columbia University and author of Gateway to Freedom; Edna Greene Medford, professor of history at Howard University; and Adam Rothman, associate professor of history at Georgetown University.
