Walking the Battle: First & Second Manassas
Saturday, October 28th, 2017, 8am - 5pm
5th in the Civil War Battlefield Series
To honor the recent sesquicentennials of the Battles of First and Second Manassas (also known as First and Second Bull Run), the Cornell and Columbia/Barnard Clubs of Washington present an all-day guided bus tour through the Manassas National Battlefield Park.
Our guide once again will be Cornell Professor David Silbey, a Cornell alumnus and military historian who has published widely on modern warfare. Here’s his description:
"There were two battles fought on the ground we will walk during this tour. Both of them can tell us much about the Civil War in 1861-1862. In the first Battle of Bull Run (or Manassas, as the Confederates referred to it), both the Union and Confederate Armies discovered that they had little idea of how to fight this new war. In the second Battle of Bull Run, the Confederate Army showed it had enough of an advantage over the Union that General Robert E. Lee, the army’s commander, began to think about taking the fight to the north. We will walk the fields over which both battles were fought to figure how both played out on the ground, how the soldiers experienced them, and how the Confederates won them.”
David is a military historian, focusing on modern warfare. His first book, The British Working Class and Enthusiasm for War, 1914-1916 was published by Taylor & Francis in 2005. His second book, A War of Empire and Frontier: The Philippine-American War, 1899-1902 was published by Hill & Wang in Spring 2007. His third book, The Boxer Rebellion and the Great Game in China, 1900 was published by Hill & Wang in March 2012. He received his BA from Cornell and his MA and Ph.D from Duke University.
