99 Ways to Die:

Garden Reception

featuring:

Dr. Ashely Alker

Emergency Medicine physician
Mary Washington Healthcare

Join us for a thought-provoking evening of hearing Dr. Ashely Alker talk about death, and 99 ways of avoiding it, to be followed by a garden reception at the International Student House.

Dr. Alker is a board-certified death escapologist. As an emergency medicine doctor, she confronts death daily. Every time evolution rears its ugly head in the form of a table saw without a safety stop or a loaded gun stored in a front pocket, emergency medicine fights back. She wrote her latest book, which is hilarious and terrifying all at the same time, to prevent emergency department visits.

This talk is an exploration of and a map to avoiding the ninety-nine most terrifying, interesting, and unfortunate ways to die, ranging from everyday household poisons to regrettable sex. While not offering medical advice, it will be more enlightening than a Google search that incorrectly diagnoses all symptoms as cancer.

Following the book-talk, there will be a reception at the garden of the International Student House, with light refreshments. All who work in the medical space, and all who want to hear about Dr. Alker’s fascinating new book are welcome to join.

"The hilariously grim and wildly insightful science book you didn’t know you needed. You’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, you’ll have endless fodder for cocktail party conversation—and you might just survive a little longer, too." Melinda Wenner Moyer, author of Hello, Cruel World!

Ashely Alker, M.D., M.Sc. is an emergency medicine physician on a mission to improve public health. While completing her master’s degree, Ashely studied at Harvard School of Public Health’s multinational institute in Cyprus, where she lived near the United Nations Green Zone and worked in humanitarian affairs at the Unit for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture. After graduating from the George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Alker served as a healthcare advisor for a U.S. Congressman. During her residency in emergency medicine at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Alker became a technical consultant and medical screenwriter, improving medical accuracy on over twenty shows, including TV and film for Netflix, HULU, HBO, and Disney. Her non-profit, Meaningful Media, connects writers, artists, and reporters with certified public health experts to develop scientifically accurate messaging.
