Do you miss reading and discussing books like we did in the Core? Join the Lion Literary Society! RSVP by April 30 to join the club and we will follow up with details about when and where the society meets in May.

As the Pulitzer Prizes approach, we are reminded of the many innovations that Columbia alumni and professors have brought to literature.  To explore these contributions, the Lion Literary Society will choose an acclaimed piece of fiction, poetry, drama, or non-fiction to analyze and discuss.  Beginning with novels published within the last ten years, we will move progressively back through Columbia’s literary history.

The meetings will take place bimonthly at a venue appropriate to the theme of the book, which will encompass coffee, drinks, or appetizers completely paid for by the participants.  We will begin at Kramer Books, Busboys and Poets, or the Petworth Citizen & Reading Room.  Politics & Prose and Teaism are also natural venues to be explored, as are the many ethnic restaurants and coffee shops around Washington, DC.

Occasionally, we may host book discussions with Columbia authors residing within the Washington, DC area.  Recent featured books may include the following:

A Strangeness in My Mind, by Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk
The Good Lord Bird, by James McBride, Winner of the 2013 National Book Award
Get in Trouble, Stories, by Kelly Link, 2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist
Swamplandia!, by Karen Russell, 2012 Pulitzer Prize Finalist
Imagine Me Gone, by Adam Halett, 2017 Pulitzer Prize Finalist
