Sufism and the Gulen Movement in Neo-Ottoman Turkey

Lecture by Dean Peter Awn

Thursday, December 8, 2016 @ 6:30 pm

The Islamist government in Turkey is evoking Ottoman past in its crackdown of Gulen movement, and opposition detractors at home and abroad. In a recent speech at his palace, Erdogan complained about foreign powers who "aim to make us forget our Ottoman and Selcuk history", when Turkey's forefathers held territory stretching across central Asia and the Middle East.

The signs are clear: Neo-Ottoman Turkey’s rejection of the fundamental principles of secularism is having a profound impact on Turkish society.

Ironically it started with the help of the same movement in the early 00’s in a tactical alliance against military tutelage and the secular elite.

In one of his last DC lectures before stepping down from his position as the Dean of the School of General Studies Dean Awn will enlighten us about Gulenism and its religious Sufi roots, how it came to prominence in Turkey especially in schools, universities, Police and Judicial system, how it came to face its demise at the hands of their former religious and political ally, and what the future holds for Turkey and the Middle East.

When: Thursday December 8, 2016; 6:30pm-8pm

Where: Whittemore House, 1526 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036 (near DuPont Cir)

Tickets: ColumbiaDC members: $10, Guests: $15
